Tummy Time Tips: How to Make It Fun and Effective for Your Baby
Tummy time is more than just adorable—it’s essential for your baby’s development. Spending time on their stomach while awake and supervised helps strengthen neck, shoulder, and arm muscles, prepares them for milestones like rolling and crawling, and helps prevent flat spots on the back of their head.

If your baby resists tummy time or you’re not sure how to get started, don’t worry! These tips will help make tummy time enjoyable for both of you - but please note it may look and sound like your baby is unhappy as its new to them.
1. Start Early—And Keep It Short at First
You can begin tummy time as soon as your baby comes home from the hospital. Start with just 1–2 minutes a few times a day, gradually working up to longer sessions as they get stronger and more comfortable.
2. Use a Rolled Towel or Tummy Time Pillow
Support your baby's chest with a rolled-up towel or specially designed tummy time cushion. This slight elevation can help them lift their head more easily and feel more comfortable during early sessions.
3. Get Down on Their Level
Lie on your tummy facing your baby, smile, talk, or sing to them. Seeing your face and hearing your voice gives them comfort and encouragement to keep trying. You can also put a stable baby safe mirror in front of them so they can see their own reflection.
4. Incorporate Tummy Time Into Daily Routines
After diaper changes, naps, or during playtime, roll your baby onto their tummy for a few minutes. Making it part of your routine helps it become a natural, regular activity.
5. Make It Interactive
Place colorful toys or a baby-safe mirror within reach during tummy time. This keeps your baby interested and encourages reaching and exploring.
6. Use a Baby Carrier or Tummy-Down Holds as Alternatives
If your baby is especially fussy, try holding them tummy-down on your forearm ("football hold") or carrying them upright in a baby carrier—both engage similar muscle groups and can be easier for some babies. I personally used to carry all of my babies around in the football hold position, it was always a way that felt very natural to me.
7. Stay Positive and Encouraging
Your baby might fuss at first—and that’s okay. Offer reassurance, take breaks when needed, and build up slowly. Over time, most babies adjust and begin to enjoy it.
8. Track Progress and Celebrate Milestones
Watch for signs of progress: longer head lifts, reaching for toys, or rolling. Celebrate these little wins—you’re supporting your baby’s growth every day.
